Let me start this post with the disclaimer that, of course, I haven't seen all of the lakes in Austria. However, in my opinion and from what I've seen, this one wins the prize for being the most beautiful one for sure - although you're welcome to provide me with evidence that proves me wrong. At any rate, this place just spectacular. It is called Steirersee, named after Styria, the Austrian region it is located in.
In total, you have to hike around five hours to enjoy it, but trust me when I say that this place is so worth it. The lake is colored in irresistible turquoise, light green and blue and, believe it or not, parts of it are actual white pebble beach sections. Guys, there's even tiny islands in this lake. It's just out of this world. Since the water is supplied directly from the surrounding mountains, it is freezing cold, so it may be a real challenge to go for a swim. But on a hot day, that's the perfect way to cool down.
How to reach it? First of all, you need a car that takes you to Styria, also known as the green heart of Austria (note: if you're with a group, you could probably rent a bus). Follow the Tauplitzalm toll road all the way up to the parking space and then, by foot, follow the signs that say "6-Seen-Wanderung", meaning "six lakes hike". If you know German, this link may be helpful. Although it is long, the hike is not steep or overly exhausting. It is, however, incredibly worthwhile: In an altitude of +1.500m, the terrain is alpine but green and you'll be greeted by loads of cows, peacefully grazing (just make sure not to come too close when there's babies). You will pass four other lakes (Krallersee, Großsee, Märchensee and Tauplitzsee), before finally reaching Steirersee and the final lake, Schwarzensee. All of them are lovely, but the one pictured here is definitely the most scenically beautiful one.
I've first seen this place two years ago and immediately knew that it wouldn't be the last time. This time I took a better camera with me than merely my phone to really capture all of it. I am still in awe looking at the pictures. The following pictures are my photo diary of this hike:
Isn't this lake amazing? Let me know if you have a favorite lake or bathing spot anywhere in the world.
