When life is hectic, there is one remedy that never fails to immediately reset my mind and fill me with gratitude to even be alive: The sea. There's nothing more calming than listening to the steady rhythm of waves, observing nature's power and feeling the salty breeze against your skin. If there is anything that proves how insignificant your existence is, it's the seeming infinity of the ocean. I could spend a few hours everyday watching the water without getting bored.
Now, the country I currently live in is landlocked, so that's not ideal. However, luckily, we do have lakes in Austria. The biggest one, Neusiedler See, happens to be very close to Vienna and is a center for holiday and leisure, as well as a hot spot for windsurfers, sailors and basically everyone who wants to feel like they're by the sea without leaving the country.
Starting from Vienna, it only takes around an hour by car or by train and the no. 1 reason to go there - apart from water sports - is the trendy restaurant Mole West. Their slogan is actually "Wenn ich den See seh, brauch ich kein Meer mehr" - a wordplay that means "When I see the lake, I don't need the sea". Yup, that pretty much sums it up.
Mole West is right by the lake and you can choose to sit in the terrace area and enjoy the almost-sea breeze (bring a hair tie girls), or in the elegantly designed inside while enjoying delicious food. The menu even includes two vegan dishes, as well as a variety of vegetarian ones and considering the stunning view, prices are surprisingly affordable. I had the vegan vegetable curry, and although I'm always a bit skeptical of ordering curry in a non-Asian restaurant, it was, frankly, amazing.
Of course I couldn't resist to capture the beautiful sunset. Next time you're in desperate need for some vitamin sea and holidays are nowhere in sight - you know where to go. If you're in Vienna, that is.
Have you been to Mole West? Are you planning to go? Let me know in the comments.
