it's story time! Ever since I created my Instagram account 3 years ago and especially since I started blogging, I was asked countless of times about my name. Not Elena obviously, but Zahir. It's not my actual last name. I wish it was though, because I really like the sound of it. In fact, Zahir is not my mum's maiden name either, nor is it my boyfriend's name and I certainly didn't name myself after the novel by Paulo Coelho. It somehow never occurred to me to google the word "Zahir", and when I did I was stunned that first of all it didn't mean what I thought it did (more on that later), but that it was used in Coelho's novel to describe "something that dominates your thinking once you've seen or touched it". Yeah... Weird and not really what I was going for.
What actually happened is that when I met my boyfriend's cousins years ago, they nicknamed me "Lil Lena" in Arabic. I am REALLY into hiphop and I thought that was the cutest nickname ever. You can see me jamming out and singing/rapping every other day in my insta stories. Aaand idgaf if haters ain't feeling me ♡ The word they used for "little" was sghira (صَغِيرةٌ,). Try saying it with the "gh" pronounced like a German or French "r" and the second "r" like in Spanish. Sorry if that confuses you :) Anyway, so when I first created my instagram account and was short of name ideas, I decided to roll with "Lil Lena". I didn't speak Arabic back then and so my best attempt at a transcription was Lena Zahir. I only changed Lena to Elena shortly before starting my blog. Voilà. Hope that clears up all the questions surrounding my background/heritage! I'm literally only Austrian, despite my blogging name. Nope, not Russian either haha.
I am wearing a polka dot dress I got on sale from Zara and my beloved cropped, slim-fit faux leather jacket from the French label Morgan de toi. I'm not actually wearing it as a jacket, but around my waist because I like the off-duty look this creates. Shoes are my vintage red lace-up shoes that I'm just a liiiittle obsessed with at the moment and the bag is a remnant from my pre-vegan era (meaning it's leather) and by the label Patrizia Pepe. And yes, it was way too cold to shoot this outfit but I was excited about the dress and wanted to do it anyway - see pics below.
