Ever since I went vegan 2.5 years ago, shopping for handbags and shoes has become a huge challenge. Most people would think finding the creamiest almond milk or tastiest chocolate is the biggest task, but clearly those people never tried finding non-leather handbags… It’s not easy, let me tell you. I’m picky to begin with and all too often, if I finally find something that I like – woah surprise! – it’s made from leather. I know I’ve said that before but I can’t wrap my head around how much we rely on animal skin to clothe us. I mean, it’s the 21st century after all. Humans have all kind of high-tech materials, yet we still wear animal skin like back in the stone age? Someone explain this please.
Anyway, all this contemplation to announce that I’ve found a really cool handbag a while back and I of course don’t want to deprive you of my life-changing discovery: Neoprene. So exciting! I wonder why this has become a trend only recently (and only in Australia), because it’s genius if you think about it. Neoprene is flexible, waterproof and breathable. It looks contemporary, insanely fashionable and feels nice against the skin as well. True, it’s made from petro-chemicals but since it also is rather long-lasting, I approve (at least no one died). There’s also limestone neoprene, which is supposed to be more eco-friendly and even longer-lasting than regular one – I’ll look for that in the future.
The bag that I own is from the Australian label Nimble, which is based in Bondi and makes the most amazing active wear as well. My bag is in the color slate grey and it’s made from perforated neoprene. One of my favorite details is the delicate “N” sign on the side - those Nimble designers have subtly including one's logo all figured out. I am also happy to report that the brand ships to Europe (including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, UK). After a quick online search, it seems to me that while there is a considerable alternative offer, most neoprene bags are actually from Australia. Let's bring the thing to Europe, shall we?
What are your favorite non-leather handbag brands? Would you be interested in my favorite labels? Let me know!
