I am beyond excited to be presenting you today this very special brand! My first encounter with BE [...] MY FRIEND was in Paris at the Maison&Objet trade show, which is among the biggest and most important interior design fairs in Europe. I was completely clueless of what to expect (spoiler: an incredible amount of furniture and interior design objects that left me very inspired and very overwhelmed), but I had prepared a list of brands that I found interesting and whose stands I wanted to see.
BE [...] MY FRIEND, a small label from Salzburg, was one of them and I guess it's easy to see why: All of their locally-produced cosmetics are free of animal products, not tested on animals, and they are packaged in recyclable and reusable bottles and boxes. On top of that, their products are 100% free of ingredients that are often referred to as harmful. Here goes the list: aluminium, mineral oil, formaldehyde, silicone, parabens, colorings, plasticizers, and PEG compounds. I'm absolutely not saying that I don't own a lot of cosmetics that do contain these ingredients - I used to not even check if they were tested on animals, so you can bet I do.
The fact that they are earth- and animal-friendly (how amazing is this slogan?) makes me love them even more.
However, at this point, I want to emphasize it's not fully proven that the ingredients listed above are actually harmful. For example, there are many "expert" websites claiming that aluminium in cosmetics is responsible for a variety of diseases. However, the European Commission is of the opinion that the relatively low levels of aluminium found in cosmetics are unlikely to be carcinogenic, linked to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. As a matter of fact, no study was ever able to fully prove these health concerns. The situation is similar for some other infamous ingredients. And yet, as the panic is spreading, many chemicals are slowly disappearing from cosmetics' ingredients lists. You're free to either think "Great! Better safe than sorry", or "That's stupid. Innocent until proven guilty". I have no PhD in chemistry and won't argue with that. But then again, who wants to take risks when it comes to cancer? Exactly.
I was extremely curious how care products free of all the supposedly harmful stuff would work. There must be a reason they are usually included in cosmetics, right? Well, honestly, I'm not so sure. The products that I have tested are absolutely marvelous. The fact that they are earth- and animal-friendly (how amazing is this slogan?) makes me love them even more. You can find my in-depth reviews below:
This gentle soap is made with mallow (German: Malve) and aloe vera and leaves your skin silky-soft. Since you can use it for your hands and body, it comes in different sizes depending if you want to use it as a soap dispenser (100ml) or shower gel (300 or 500ml). The bottles are refillable and I think with its iconic bold type it is such a highlight in my bathroom!
2. LIP BALM
People who know me will know that I always, and I mean always have at least five lip products in my bag at any given time. That includes the rare occasion I'm going out at night - I don't care if the clutch is the size of my hand, the balms, chapsticks, glosses and lipsticks are coming, too. So as an experienced and overly enthusiastic user of lip care, I can safely say that this lip balm has one of the most pleasant scents ever. It smells like arolla pine (German: Zirbe) and lemon balm (Zitronenmelisse) and reminds me of my childhood days when I would devour absurd amounts of lemon ice cream in the summer time. I don't know if you have any idea what I'm talking about, but this refreshing, citrus-scented lip balm smells exactly like that. This lap balm keeps the lips hydrated and is perfect to wear as is or underneath a lipstick or gloss. The texture is less soft than what you're used to from common lip care products, but it still feels really nice on the lips.
I was a little unsure of how to use this face and body spray at first, until I found a perfect description at the website of Viennese store "der kleine salon" . While you can just use it as a regular spray to calm your skin, you can put it in the fridge before usage to provide an extra refreshment on a hot summer day! Just spray it on your face and use your ring finger to gently tap it into the skin. Apparently you can also use it on your bed sheets since lavender is said to help you get better sleep. I haven't got around to try using it that way, but I sure do love how versatile this product is.
This lotion is my absolute favorite! It emits a soothing, elderflower-scented aroma that makes me dream of sitting in a flower field. Besides elderflower (German: Holunderblüte), it also contains shea butter, sunflower oil and almond oil which all help to nourish and soften your skin. Again, it is useable for both hands and body and comes in different sizes. It is definitely my favorite BE [...] MY FRIEND product so far and I really recommend trying it if you're looking for a floral-scented lotion for spring and summer.
